Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern in HoHoKus, NJ – A Winner of Many Awards and A Loser to Taste and Cleanliness

I was at Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern twice. The first time, I had pizza at the bar – FUNGHI Pizza with shiitake mushrooms, arugula, smoked mozzarella and lemon. I forgot to take a photo and therefore could not write a post. The pizza was average. The second time I went back, I was seated in the library section and made sure that I took pictures of the food. So here they are.

As I was researching to write about this experience, I went onto Ho-Ho-Kus Inn’s site and found that they were the winner of Diner’s Choice at OpenTable.com 2014, Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence 2014, and 201 Magazine’s Best of Bergen 2014. I was surprised! I had no idea that they were this good. Are they really?

As I sat in the library with old photos that hung on the wall and a dim light right on top of the tiny table, I saw dust bunnies on the lampshade right above me. It looked like no one had taken a wipe to it in weeks. The frame of the picture that hung next to the table had collected a lot of dust. Dust on top of a grassy frame… Can you see it now? I ran my finger through the top of the frame and a line of dust came off. I am REALLY REALLY surprised that a restaurant charging this type of pricing and has won numerous awards can get away with this level of cleanliness. How do they pass health inspections? Or does it not matter in the dining room? #DirtyRestaurants

PASTRAMI BRISKET SANDWICH: $16 APPLE BUTTER• CHEDDAR CHEESE • SLICED APPLE• SEMOLINA ROLL. The food was ok.

HIT BURGER: $15 CHEDDAR • BACON • LETTUCE • TOMATO• CHEFS SPECIAL AIOLI • PICKLE • BRIOCHE BUN. This actually was not too bad.

But would you eat there again knowing that no one bother to dust the dinning room? Hell no.
